#3 Hungry Journeys: Bangkok Flavours, Penang Adventures
Editor’s Bite
I have just recently went out of Penang for a trip; a much-needed short break with my family took me to Bangkok. This edition shares some glimpses of that trip — just enough to give you a few ideas if you’re planning one yourself.
But beyond Bangkok, I’m back on my beloved island with fresh energy. New content is on the way, I’ll be joining one of Penang’s biggest drinks events, and I’m also building something new for the Hungry brand: a website that ties everything together.
Bangkok in a Snapshot
Some of the highlights in Bangkok:
Maeklong Railway Market & Damnoen Saduak Floating Market – a surreal scene of trains brushing past market stalls, followed by the lively floating market atmosphere. A little touristy, yes, but still worth a visit if you’ve never been.
Chinatown & Song Wat Road – streets full of food, old shophouses, and the kind of heritage charm I love.
Temples & Shrines – Wat Arun, Erawan Shrine, and even a small temple stumbled upon by chance, each with its own character.
Street Food – porridge, fishballs, pork noodles, bao, and more. Simple, alleyway stalls but flavours that linger in your memory.

And of course, the city’s cocktail scene at night — Bangkok knows how to do it. I visited one of the OG cocktail bar, Vesper as well as a newer one, Messenger Service Bar.

Talking about the cocktail scene, Penang is having one of the best cocktail event in the upcoming week, and I’ll be part of it. Read the next section about it.
Penang Cocktail Week, September 1-7
Now in its third year, Penang Cocktail Week has quickly grown into one of Malaysia’s most exciting drinks festivals. For a whole week, the island comes alive with guest shifts from world-class bartenders, special pop-up events, bar takeovers, workshops, and tasting sessions. It’s not just for cocktail lovers — it’s also a gathering for anyone who enjoys good drinks, creative experiences, and Penang’s buzzing nightlife.
During its first edition, I was just a regular audience, being curious about it. Subsequently I was invited as a guest and this year, I’ll be participating together with The Warung to serve food at the Bar Show. This time, I’ll be serving waffles and ice cream with a special cocktail sauce.

It’s a week long event that starts from September 1. For more of the events, check out their website at: penangcocktailweek.com
A New Home for Hungry: hungry.my
Many of you often ask me for food and drink recommendations in Penang, and I realised my posts on Instagram don’t always make it easy for you all to compile. So I decided to create hungry.my — a digital home for all things Hungry.
It will:
Gather my recommendations in one place.
Feature long-form stories and guides beyond short captions.
Grow into a space where both locals and travelers can discover Penang (and beyond).
And a digital space the Hungry family can call it home
This is a little sneak preview for my subscribers before the public launch of hungry.my. I’m still fine-tuning and adding more writeups, but I’d love to hear your thoughts — feel free to DM me on Instagram.
Until Then…
The “Hungry” adventure has grown from a single Instagram post to a community, then to spin-offs like Hungry Cook Lab, and now to events and a website. It’s becoming bigger, busier, and more exciting — but what keeps me going is you.
Your support, your messages, and your curiosity fuel everything I do. Thank you for following along, for reading, and for being part of this journey. There’s so much more to come, and I can’t wait to share it with you.
Let’s Get Hungry,
