#2 Keeping the Flame Alive – Food, Legacy & New Adventures

Editor’s Bite

It’s been a while since I sent out my first (and so far, only) Hungry newsletter. In the meantime, I’ve been busy exploring new places to eat and sharing those discoveries on Hungry Penang Lang’s social media.

Behind the scenes, I’ve been reflecting on where I want to take Hungry Penang Lang as a whole. Friends and followers have shared plenty of ideas — and one of them has turned into something exciting: Hungry Cook Lab, a new spinoff from the Hungry Universe. You can read more about it below.

Whatever new journey or project I embark on, this newsletter will always be the place where I announce it first.

Food passed on through generations.

Recently, I visited a few local food stalls that have been passed down to a new generation — not just to young hawkers in their 20s or 30s, but to people who once worked in comfortable, air-conditioned offices with fixed hours.

Instead of staying in those jobs, they chose the harder path: waking before dawn, working long hours in the heat, and taking on the demanding life of a hawker. Why? Because they felt a deep responsibility to continue their family’s legacy.

Two stalls I recently visited were Sri Bahari Hainan Chicken Rice and Air Itam Sisters Curry Mee. These aren’t the only ones with younger generations taking the helm, but they stood out during my recent food hunts.

As someone who treasures Penang’s food heritage, it’s heartwarming to see this trend. While hawker culture in many big cities is being replaced by foreign labour, Penang still has young locals keeping the tradition alive.

Let’s keep supporting and encouraging them — so we can continue enjoying the flavours we grew up with.

New restaurant opening: Moo Point Steaks

Good news for steak lovers in Penang — there’s a new spot in town.

Moo Point Steaks is led by a chef with decades of experience in London and Dubai, now bringing his craft to Penang. We tried the sirloin and ribeye, both perfectly cooked and full of flavour. The variety of sauces only made them better, and the sides were just as thoughtfully prepared.

Located in a charming old shophouse on Hutton Lane, the warm, cosy space makes it perfect for a date night or a casual dinner with friends.

I am launching Hungry Cook Lab

I have launched a spinoff of Hungry Penang Lang, the Hungry Cook Lab.

I’ve been cooking, failing, experimenting, and eating through it all.

So I thought why not take it further and record the journey of it?

It is where we share recipes, sometimes weird ideas, and everything in between.

Hungry Cook Lab is where I cook the simple regular meals, sometimes classic dishes, and most of the time experimenting. It's part playground, part exploration in the kitchen.

Sometimes I may be cooking, sometimes it may be a collaboration with other content creators.

Follow @hungrycooklab. It’s going to be chaotic, curious, and kinda delicious.

Thank you for staying around

That's all for this newsletter. I have so many things to share and announce, but let’s keep it until here for now.

If you know someone who love food stories, help them by introducing this Hungry adventure.

See you in the social media while I curate more stories for the next newsletter.
