#1 The Inaugural Hungry Newsletter - Welcome to the community

Sudah Makan Kah?

Malaysians are a bunch of kind-hearted people. “Sudah Makan Kah” is a Malay word which means “Have you taken your meal?” You’ll hear this often when Malaysians greet each other. Doesn’t matter it is in Malay, Chinese or any other local dialect, this is a common question when we meet each other.

It shows how much we care if you have taken your meal. Even if it is not during lunch or dinner hours, you will still hear people asking if you have eaten. It is a polite way and perhaps different compared to other countries.

So, sudah makan kah?

The beginning of the Hungry Newsletter

Thank you again for subscribing to the Hungry newsletter, and you are the first bunch of Hungry community. Frankly, when I brainstormed about starting a newsletter, there were many ideas, from food stories, food recommendations, giveaways, and many more. With limited resources, I’ll begin with something simple and practical, which is to share stories that I find out about food.

My story so far

Hungry Penang Lang was started in around May 2023 where it serves as a showcase of my food journey. During the first year, the content type did not evolve much. It was then about tweaking my video quality, learning about social media and understanding more about foods.

After the first year, I started to meet people and to understand things in the food & beverage industry. Then I added a new series of content which is the food stories. You can check out one of the food story about Char Koay Teow in this link.

Now I am taking a step further and to introduce a newsletter, which I will have more flexibility in the content. Obviously, this is my first newsletter and I wanted to invite you to join this journey and share more ideas on what I can do more.

What kind of content would you love to read about? Is it food, news or stories about my journey?

Or should I organise events, maybe a food festival or a supper club? Or giveaways?

Throw in your ideas in the email, or you can drop me a message in Instagram.

Food trend and news: events, new restaurant openings

Scottish distiller Tomatin relaunches The Antiquary at Ignis, Kuala Lumpur

Few weeks ago, I was invited to a tasting event at Ignis in Kuala Lumpur. The invitation came as a surprise as I am mostly based in Penang, but I decided to attend anyway. I felt that to provide more quality content, I will need to explore foods of different category and from different places as well.

Back to the event: Scottish distillery Tomatin collaborated with Ignis to curate a special five-course pairing menu with The Antiquary that will be available from 1 September to 30 November. The menu is crafted by Head Chef Desmond Chong, offers unique pairings for each course with the selected expression served as either a cocktail, neat or on the rocks - devised to bring out the flavour notes of the whiskies and complement the dishes.

Uncle Roger to open new restaurant in Malaysia

If you’re a person who consumes a lot of food content, there is a high chance that you bump into the videos of ‘Uncle Roger’, whose real name is Nigel Ng. He is a comedian from Malaysia who has built a large fan base and also collaborated with celebrity chefs Gordon Ramsay.

Opening at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur on September 11, one of the highlights that everyone will be looking forward to is the fried rice, which Uncle Roger has been obsessed with.

That’s all for now. But I need some help from you.

I guess that’s all for a start in the first Hungry newsletter, and there are few matters I will need your help to improve the newsletter.

What do you think of the Hungry Newsletter? Could we do better?

If you love the Hungry newsletter, can you help us to recommend it to a friend by sending them this link?

Or you know something that I should know about? Share your story.

See you in the social media while I curate more stories for the next newsletter.
